Atkinson’s Candy (@ChickOStick) Has Gluten-Free Options

Even since I was diagnosed with gluten-intolerance 17 years ago I’ve had to go through every single thing I’ve ever eaten and research if it contained gluten or not. I will say that one of the most difficult things that I had to eliminate was candy. I was diagnosed with gluten-intolerance while attending college, my diet was not the best and I will admit that at that time I enjoyed the sugar high but as the years have gone by I’m far more conscious about what I put into my body. I’ve been looking for an alternative to the gluten-free starburst and gummy bears that I have from time to time and I think I finally found them.

I received a call from Scott, the candy rep for Atkinson Candy Company. The Atkinson family has been making candy in Texas since 1932!! I’ve heard of them before and was really excited they reached out to me because they are targeting the diabetic and celiac/gluten-intolerant community. We had a great conversation about how serious Atkinson’s takes gluten-free. What I enjoyed most about the discussion was his knowledge about gluten-free and the fact that they have several different options that are also sugar-free that can satisfy our sweet tooth.

Let’s be honest, everyone loves candy and needs a fix for their sweet tooth from time to time so I must say I was excited to get the Peanut Butter Bars, Chick-O-Stick and Mint Sticks in the mail.

At this point your mouth is probably salivating with what my thoughts are right? Yeah, trust me when I opened up the box I immediately busted open the Peanut Butter Bars because I love peanut butter. YES, these little candies are crunchy and loaded with a smooth peanut butter flavor.

I next tried the Chick-O-Stick candies. They had a slight crunch to them but mostly a soft center. If you like coconut then these are a must as they have a hint of peanut butter with a packed coconut punch.

Finally, I had to finish with the mints to freshen my breath. I will be honest I’m extremely particular about mints because they can’t be overpowering and these had just the right amount of mint flavor. Enough to freshen the breath but not make you tear up.

Mint Twists

Check back next week as I’m going to do another write up in regards to Atkinson Candy Company but I’m going target the sugar free aspect in regards to adult onset diabetes. My intention is to interview, get feedback from someone who has adult onset diabetes and see what he has to say in regards to taste.

As of now I’m a fan and you can be too. Check them out on Facebook and give them a “LIKE.” If you happen to be on Twitter you can also follow them as well. @ChickOStick

Be sure to check out their website as all of these candies are 15% off for the next two weeks. Also, mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 2nd 7pm CT when we will be having a Twitter party where you have a chance to win prize packs.
