When I first started talking to Atkinson’s Candy about reviewing their products I told them I thought it would be cool to write two different posts focusing on gluten-free and diabetics. Last week I took the gluten-free angle but this week I wanted to focus more on how the treats are sugar-free and good for diabetics. I decided to interview my father who has adult on-set diabetes. Here’s what he had to say….
As a type II diabetic I am always searching for “Sugar Free Snacks”. In addition to the diabetes, I have a sweet tooth and welcome good sugar free candies to satisfy my yen for sweets. There are many “Sugar Free” products, but not all are good tasting in my opinion.
I have just been introduced to “Sugar Free” candies manufactured by the Atkinson Candy Company. I have tried three “Sugar Free” products and I am glad to say that I was very happy with the taste of all three. The advantage of these candies for the diabetic is that they are sweetened with Sugar Alcohols. Sugar Alcohols, as they sweeten the food products we ingest, do not raise blood sugar. The other plus for these candies is that they are Trans Fat and Cholesterol free and relatively low in calories.
In addition to the fact that the candy will not raise blood sugar, it is important that the candy taste good. The Peanut Butter Bars had a rich pea nutty flavor and a sweet outer coating that was so good it made it impossible to tell that the candy was sugar free. The Chick-O-Sticks were also rich in peanut/cocunut flavor and sweet as well. The Mint Twists were again very sweet along with a true mint taste.
I award kudos to the Atkinson Candy Company for producing their excellent products. I hope that they will produce other flavors in the future.
